How to Build a Composite Boat: Part I
Everything Starts With The Plug
In composite boatbuilding, quality starts long before the first laminate is applied. Before the mold is produced, the entire project depends on the accuracy of the plug. Surface fairness, geometry, symmetry, and ultimately the final finish quality are all defined at this stage. Any imperfection introduced here is transferred throughout the production process.
Modern yacht plugs are typically CNC-milled and then manually faired to achieve the required surface precision. This is where proper engineering and surface development become critical.
At MIMTec, we support this stage by delivering production-ready surfaces with accurate geometry and high-quality modeling standards — helping ensure the CNC milling process reproduces the design with maximum precision and minimum rework.
