Structural Bonding Is More Than Holding Parts Together
Once the hull and deck have been laminated, the next critical stage begins: structural bonding. At first glance, bonding bulkheads, girders and floors into the hull can appear to be a straightforward assembly process. In reality, this is the stage where individual composite parts become a single structural system.
Every bonded joint is responsible for transferring loads throughout the vessel. A poorly designed joint can create stress concentrations, reduce structural efficiency and ultimately limit the performance of the entire structure — regardless of how well the surrounding laminates were engineered.
For this reason, engineering is as important as workmanship. Joint geometry, laminate transitions, adhesive selection and surface preparation all influence how loads are transferred from one component to the next, and each must be considered before the first bond is made rather than resolved on the shop floor.
