The Hull-to-Deck Joint Is One of The Most Critical Connections
Once the hull and deck are completed, they must be joined into a single structure. At first glance this can appear to be a simple assembly step, but the hull-to-deck joint is one of the most important structural connections in the entire vessel.
This joint must transfer loads between the hull and the deck while maintaining stiffness, alignment and long-term durability. Wave impacts, torsion, vibration and operational loads all pass through this connection. A poorly designed joint can lead to local stress concentrations, excessive movement, water ingress and long-term structural problems.
For this reason, the joint is far more than a bonding detail. Flange geometry, bonding surfaces, laminate continuity and mechanical fastening strategy all influence the structural behavior of the connection, and each must be resolved in the design stage rather than corrected during assembly.
