World Earth Day 2026

On World Earth Day, it’s worth reflecting on how material choices are evolving across the marine industry.

As the industry looks for more sustainable solutions, natural fiber composites are gaining real traction — particularly in applications where performance and environmental impact must be carefully balanced. Materials like flax fiber are already being used in practice, not just as concepts. In our case, we’ve explored it in a kitesurf board, where it offers an interesting combination of weight, flex, and vibration damping.

Beyond that, natural fibers are finding applications in interior panels and furniture, deck elements and non-critical structural parts, hull components in smaller craft, and sports and recreational equipment. Compared to traditional composites, flax fibers can provide lower environmental impact, improved vibration damping, and a more progressive, controlled flex behavior, while also introducing challenges such as variability in material properties, moisture sensitivity, and long-term durability considerations.

The opportunity is not about replacing traditional materials entirely, but about understanding where they make sense. In our view, the future of marine engineering will be driven by smart material selection — combining performance, buildability, and environmental responsibility.
